Understanding how your customers and prospects search for your products and services is crucial to the success of any search engine optimization campaign. This process, known as keyword research, can be time-consuming, and in some cases, expensive endeavor.

While there are many keyword research tools on the market, including free options such as Keyword Planner from Google, Ubersuggest recently added some key features that make it a strong rival to many paid keyword research tools on the market. The best part about this is that it’s a free tool.

Ubersuggest allows you to start your keyword research process with either a targeted keyword or a targeted website domain (either your own or that of a competitor).

How to use Ubersuggest for a keyword search
By inputting a keyword as a starting point, you’ll be able to analyze several useful data points to better understand how a potential customer is searching for your product or service. The example used below is the term “holiday parties.”

Some of the data points include:

  • Search Volume: This indicates the average number of times the term is searched in a month. The chart above indicates how seasonality affects this average.
  • SEO Difficulty: On a scale of 0-100, this metric indicates how difficult it may be to rank on the first page organically for the selected term.
  • Paid Difficulty: On a scale of 0-100, this metric indicates how competitive pay-per-click ads will be for the selected term.
  • Cost Per Click: This is an estimated cost per click for a paid search campaign.

There is also information provided about how often organic search results are actually clicked. For this particular search term, many of the searches don’t result in a click; rather, searchers may simply interact with a Google feature such as Event Listings.

Demographic data for searchers is estimated as well. This search term indicates that about 50% of searchers are 35 to 44.

The keyword data screen below includes other helpful content such as related keywords and examples of successful content related to the initial search term.

This information can very useful when trying to determine other ways that customers may be searching for solutions related to your product or service. Investigating some of these keyword options may lead to content generation ideas for your website including blogs, videos, infographics and more.

How to use Ubersuggest for a domain
This tool can also be used to “spy” on your competitors’ websites. Which keywords and landing pages are driving the most traffic for them? Simply enter a URL to find out.

The domain overview will give you a good estimate of how the competitor site stacks up to yours in terms of organic search traffic and domain strength. In addition, you can see top pages and keywords that drive search traffic to the site. These can be useful to determine if there is content relevant to your website that you can possibly improve upon and use to drive search traffic to your own domain.

As you can see, there are several valuable features at your fingertips in Ubersuggest, and best of all, they are all completely free. You simply need to create a user profile and you can start using the software immediately. If you haven’t updated your keyword research in a while, now’s the perfect time to make a New Year’s Resolution to give this new tool a try and to spruce up your SEO strategy in 2020.
