When should I hire new employees?

Hiring should be done at the right time (... obviously). But when is the right time to hire new employees?

Here are a couple of questions to answer to help determine if now is the right time to bring on additional talent:

1.    Am I, my department managers, or staff working too many hours that it is affecting their quality of life?
2.    Are my customers being serviced the way I want them to be?
3.    Do you we have enough people to support this new client/project?
4.    Am I anticipating someone leaving and should plan ahead?
5.    Do I have the right people in strategic positions to grow the business?

As a business owner or department manager, it's always a good idea to keep a pipeline of talent available. You can do this through personal networking, job postings, or a great recruiter whom you trust and respect. On top of that, hiring talent should be viewed as an investment in the present and future for which you will expect a return, not as an expense. And, you do not have to limit yourself to full-time employees when hiring, especially if your business is small. Consider either temporary or contract staff that can be paid by the hour or project, if you feel an immediate need. Recruiters can also keep you informed of the top talent in your industry who are ready to make a move.

Trust your instincts, but do not wait too long; your competition has the same question to answer.
